In the morning Prof. [Hermann] Zondek [director of Bikur Holim Hospital] visited me to determine the cause of the pain that attacks me from time to time in the heart. He insisted that I cancel the assemblies – no more and no less.

       – The first assembly [was] at Beit ‘Am – at 10.

The second assembly [was] at Yafor, 2:30, in Yiddish. A strange experience. Jewish Jaffa – a public that speaks Bulgarian, French, Yiddish – and also Hebrew. I don’t know what the assembly meant for the attendees – for me it said a lot.

In the evening Ziama [Aran] telephoned me [to say] that good news is coming from everywhere – on the basis of the many attendees at our assemblies, the public mood, conversations with people. Fierce action is being taken against Herut’s demagoguery, and Ziama is concerned about ETZEL members. Mapam members have also approached us to protect workers’ institutions, and Ziama is concerned that ETZEL will attempt to intervene by force. I said that these are not elections to the [Zionist] Congress or Knesset Israel [a Jewish representative body under the British Mandate] – but to the State of Israel, and every effort to use force will be mercilessly suppressed.
