At 9:30 a.m. Duvdevani telephoned me [to say] that they’ve already counted 41,211 votes by soldiers, which is approximately 58% of the votes being counted. An additional 8,000 or so votes need clarification.
The votes counted are distributed as follows: A – 17,135 – 41.5%, M – 8,715 – 21.1%, B – 3,070 – 7.4%; H – 5,717 – 13.8%; TV – 704 – 1.7%, S – 840 – 2%, P – 1,179 – 2.8%, Tz – 1,483 – 3.5%, K – 1,316 – 3.2%.
– Yesterday along with Ziama and Eshkol we decided to convene a conference on Saturday for workers who are members of the party, with the intention of discussing the worker in the state, the Histadrut in the state.
– Indications are that the main parties will receive: A – 145,000, M – 56,000, B – 51,000, H – 46,000, G.Z. 21,000, P 18,500, S 16,000, all the voting tickets that are plausible for the government – about 307,000, of which we have 47.2%.
– Nehemiah brought the material from the Staff. Perlson visited me and gave me a report, proposals, and considerations regarding the budget and arrangements in the Defense Ministry. Isser brought me news from the political “fronts”: In the Religious Front there’s a likelihood of a split. HaPo’el HaMizrachi won’t go with HaMizrachi nor with the Aguda [Agudas Israel] without the Aguda’s workers. There’s depression within Herut, and leaders are laying low, counting on help from the General Zionists. Mapam is depressed. In the army Mapam members were angry about the platform. Sneh, characteristically, misled both sides: he told “activists” that he intends to conquer the Triangle and rule over it, [and he told] HaShomer HaTza'ir that he intends to establish an Arab state. In Mapam circles within the army, only Yisrael has influence. Tabenkin is on the sidelines and has no influence. The General Zionists are fighting over who will be in the government – Bernstein or Rokach. Surely there will be a split.
– Nehemiah brought me a provisory summary: civilian eligible voters: Jews 376,500, non-Jews 35,000, total 411,500, army personnel 90,853 – overall total 502,850. There are another 5,814 army personnel who were not included (why?). ID cards distributed to civilians: Jews 356,500, non-Jews 33,500, total 390,000, to the Personnel Department for the army 90,853, overall total 480,853. There are undistributed cards: Jews 20,000, non-Jews 1,500, total 21,500; it’s not known how many were distributed in the army.
– At 7:30 p.m. Bahir informed me of the election results. There are 5,000 invalid [votes], and 5,000 army votes that haven’t been counted yet; of the rest – 427,000 – [the results are as follows]: A – 153,000 – 35.8%, B – 52,600 – 12.35%, G – 2,840; H – 49,280 – 11.5%, T [LeMa’an Yerushalayim] – 848; YA 3,174; YG 2,486; YD (Nazareth) 7,382; T 5,299, TV 5,299; YH 2,826; YT 239; LV (?) 4,369; M – 63,107, N – 4,017; S – 15,017, P – 17,680; P.Tz. 2,789; Tz – 22,524; K – 14,999; Religious Worker 1,276, Th (Arab Mapai) 2,794.
– In the army, after counting 72,046 votes, they were distributed [as follows]: A – 29,526 – 41%; M – 14,948 – 20.75[%]; H – 10,597 – 14.75%, B – 5,327 – 7.5%; P – 2,367; Tz 2,514, P – 2,005, LEHI – 1,290, G 546. S – 1,544, YG – 284.
– The lists that lost votes because they didn’t reach a single mandate amount to 19,272; thus there remain 407,728 votes distributed by percentage, of which we have 37.5% – that is, 44 guaranteed delegates (or 45). In Sherf’s view we have 46 guaranteed delegates (aside from 2 Arabs), Mapam has 19 delegates, the Front has 16, ETZEL has14, the G.Z. have 7, P. has 5, the Sephardim have 4, the Commun[ists] have 4, WIZO has 1, LEHI has 1, the Yemenites have 1, Nazareth has 2 – total 121 (!)
