Sunday, February 27, 1949 Riptin and Ben-Aharon came. They’re not giving up the two ministries they already have, and are demanding another – Defense or Interior. They’re also demanding more areas of responsibility for their ministries: Agriculture to include lands; Labor to include both soldiers’ rehabilitation and housing. Aside from taking part in all the ministries – especially Defense and Foreign Affairs – general directors. – Sheetrit came on behalf of the Sephardim. They’re proposing a broad coalition. But in his opinion only one for the G.Z. All four will vote in favor of the government. He demands Police and Minorities for himself. Thinks there should be a Ministry of Minorities. – I received the vote count for the Histadrut through February 25, 1949: 130,118 were counted, of which 16,453 were soldiers. The soldiers votes were distributed [as follows]: 8,910 (54.2%) A; 6,221 (37.8%) – M; 548 (3.3%) P.; 530 (3.2%) – K. 244 (1.5%) Sh.; 113,655 civilian votes distributed [as follows]: A – 65,053 (57.8%), M – 38,232 (33.6%), P – 4,404 (3.9%), K – 2,810 (2.4%), Sh. 2,566 (2.3%); total – A 74,563 (57.31%), M – 44,453 (34.16), P – 4,452 (3.81%), K – 3,340 (2.56%), Sh. – 2,810 (2.16%). For the agricultural committee, 58,801 votes were counted, of which A – 31,195 (53.05%), M – 23,742 (40%), P – 2,409 (4%), K – 815 (1.38%), Sh. – 640 (1.1%). In the moshavot [rural communities of private farms] there are 25,806 (of which A – 15,570 – 60.3%, M – 7,617 – 29.5%, P – 1,425 – 5.5%, K – 675 – 7.6% [sic], Sh. – 519 – 2%). The [labor-affiliated?] settlement [i.e., settlements affiliated with the labor movement and workers’ parties] has 32,995, of which A – 15,625 – 47.3%, M – 16,125 – 48.8%, P. 984 – 3%, K – 140 – 0.4%, Sh. – 121 – 0.3%. We need to scrutinize our actions if we have a minority in the [labor-affiliated?] settlement. – Ben-Aharon and Riptin came again. We spoke almost exclusively about portfolios. – In the afternoon I invited the party [parliamentary group of Mapai?] and reported on the situation. Afterwards I met with the Progressives, and finally with the Religious Front.
