[Minister of Religious Affairs] Rabbi [Yehuda] Fishman [Maimon] came to see me. He's asking for an order [to be issued] regarding kashrut in the army. I said that without the appointment of supervisors over the kitchens, an order won't help; he promised to suggest someone from PAI [Po'ale Agudas Israel]. I promise to bring him a form for an order in this matter tomorrow, which will be sent by the chief of staff. He's also asking for the appointment of military rabbis. I replied that without the Staff I won't do this, and we scheduled a meeting for Thursday with 2-3 Staff members to discuss the matter. He also requests the appointment of liaison officers from the army in all the captured territories - with members of the other religions. According to him, M.S. [Moshe Sharett] agreed to this. I'll discuss this with Moshe. He's complaining about [Eliezer] Kaplan refusing to provide him with the salary for rabbis and cantors and yeshivas - about 1,200 per month - and he asked for the list in order to have the Treasury [Finance Ministry] itself send the money. He also suggests that the government pay the salary of the two chief rabbis. I expressed doubt as to whether this was desirable - even from the rabbis' perspective.
- The [IDF] military assembly exceeded my hopes. Shlomo [Shamir] deserves congratulations.
