[Thursday,] October 28, 1948
I instructed Ya'akov [Dori] to implement my order regarding the Palmach staff.
- There was a gathering for Morgenthau in the government house. He informed me that the worrying news that he'd had yesterday - has undergone a change for the better. Once again he didn't specify what's happening.
At this gathering [Yosef] Yanover from South Africa recalled an incident I'd forgotten: during the Eretz-Israel conference in London in late 1938 and early 1939, I commented at a gathering of Eretz-Israel Zionists that the English should be removed from the country. [Pinhas] Rutenberg jumped up and shouted: This means we'll be annihilated by the Arabs. I replied that we can defend ourselves. Rutenberg shouted that this is insanity….
- A ship arrived with spare parts for the air fleet including six small "boats" [for naval sabotage]. Another three are due to arrive.
- In the afternoon State Council.
- Ashdod, Nitzanim are in our hands [following the Egyptian retreat].
In the Security Council England (and China) are demanding sanctions against the Jews or the Egyptians if they don't withdraw from their positions. The discussion was postponed to tomorrow - and tonight the action in the north [Operation Hiram] begins.
- Committee of Five meeting. I reported on the situation at the fronts.
