Saturday, first day of Passover The nighttime operation did not take place-because the report about the surrender of the buildings to the Arabs proved false. Rachel [Yanait] told me that it's the opposite, the British are digging in at the Russian Compound and are about to bring British troops in…. - Finally I received word that the first cannon have been received-there should be 31 with shells, as Ephraim [Dekel] told me. It changes the situation radically-we won't stand defenseless against the Legion's tanks and artillery. - A nighttime operation against Sheikh Jarrah is being planned. - An assembly of members [of Mapai]-amid heightened gunfire from Mamilla. I analyzed the course of the war thus far and the risks and prospects for the future. - Sidney Green from America arrived on our plane from Tel Aviv (to the new airfield [in Jerusalem]). The [U.S.] Government cancelled the tax exemption on [philanthropic] funds for Keren Hayesod-the first sanction against the [Jewish] Agency. The cancellation was explained on juridical grounds but the reason is obviously political. - David [Shaltiel] complained bitterly: the "Jebusite" staff is a disaster. Yitzhak Sadeh brags irresponsibly. They don't want to make [Yitzhak] Rabin [Harel Brigade] available to ''Etsiyyoni [Jerusalem Brigade]-they sent Yitzhak Sadeh, and to sweeten it they added Fritz. Y.S. demands that Jerusalem send forces to Kastel and Abu Ghosh. The Nebi Samwil operation was all wrong from the outset. Bidu's failure [reinforcements to Nebi Samwil]-the fall of the Davidka. (This piece was stolen in Jerusalem-and was not sent [to an operation] from Tel Aviv. The Davidka was sent to Etsiyyoni and the Palmach people in Kiryat ''Anavim "took" it, and now it has fallen into enemy hands.) It was decided to operate in Sheikh Jarrah tonight. Shu'afat has to be taken. Leaving it was a mistake. Neve Ya'akov and ''Atarot have to be liberated.
